The main task in the execution phase is to bring the change which in full use will result in the business benefits realization.
The project steering group works actively to ensure that the project deliverables in full use will bring the business benefits. The steering group’s other main responsibility is to support the project manager and the team to achieve the objectives of the project. The steering group approves the main deliverables and the milestones.
The project will be executed according to the project plan. The selected project life cycle model has a major impact on the way to execute the project, but the deliverables accomplished by the project closing are the same in every life cycle model. The project may have several go lives, but there is always the final go live to complete the change matching the business case.
Change management happens according to the change management plan. Communication happens frequently using different channels. The content of the communication goes deeper step by step when the solution matures.
The outcome of the execution is the solution/product which once in use, will enable the the projects objectives to be reached. The organization is ready, willing and happy to make the change enabled by the project.
During the execution there may be several releases or go-lives based on the selected project life-cycle model:
- In some point every project has the concept that matches the objectives and the business case and that has to be frozen. This is Milestone M2: Concept approved
- In some point every project has a Working Solution that matches the objectives and the business case and that has to be frozen. This is Milestone M3: Solution approved.
- In incremental development M2 and M3 are close to each other and M4.
- Once the concept and solution are in place, milestone M4: Ready for final go-live is reached.
