Smart maintenance development at Efora

Efora is a subsidiary of Stora Enso. It is responsible for the maintenance operations of the six largest Stora Enso production sites in Finland. Efora’s key customer promise is “Smarter Maintenance”. Efora started Smart Maintenance development with an agile approach where piloting played an important role in evaluating service concepts. One of the pilots was the mobilization of maintenance work orders where the development idea had come directly from the maintenance personnel. There are over 100,000 maintenance work orders generated each year. Therefore, considerable improvement potential existed.
Midagon’s role
Midagon was Efora’s selected partner in pilot project planning and implementation. Agile methodology was used in the pilots, not only for software development but also for project work in general.
Program success and delivered benefits
The key deliverable of the pilot project was the mobile maintenance work order functionality. The functionality made work order generation faster, improved data quality and enabled maintenance work management in real time. The ability to attach pictures to the work orders made the analysis of described problems easier for the maintenance professionals. The use of the agile methodology ensured continuous feedback between developers and users. The development was kept on the right track based on the feedback. The development results matched the functional requirements very well and met the users’ real needs in the field.
